THE PROPERTIES OF DIAMOND

Diamond, like graphite, is a form of carbon. But, owing to a different molecular arrangement, its properties are very different.
The main properties of diamond are:

THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY: Highest of any known material 
HARDNESS: 10
SPECIFIC GRAVITY: 3, 52
REFRACTIVE INDEX: 2,42
DISPERSION: 0,044
CRYSTAL FORM: Octahedral (commonest form)
CLEAVAGE: Octahedral
CLARITY: Generally very transparent
COLOUR: Usually yellowish to colourless
LUSTRE: Adamantine — ie 17% of incident light reflected at surface
Other important properties are BRILLIANCE, which is the quality of the internally and externally reflected light, and SCINTILLATION, which is brilliance in motion.
